Half Price Books, the nation’s largest family-owned new and used bookstore chain, will eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags at all 120 retail locations this Earth Day – Saturday, April 22.
The company’s decision is part of an on-going commitment to implement small changes to create more sustainable business practices that align with the founders’ mission to be kinder to the environment.
“Half Price Books reached our 50th anniversary benchmark in July of 2022. Our company was founded on the idea that we can help keep books, music, movies and more in circulation, but we don’t want that commitment to stop with what we buy and sell,” said Kathy Doyle Thomas, president of Half Price Books. “Today they are calling it circular retail, but to us, this is what we have done since 1972.”
To encourage adoption of the company’s sustainability efforts, Half Price Books is offering customers a free HPB tote bag with any $25 in-store purchase from April 22 – May 6, and shoppers are also welcomed to bring their own reusable tote bags from home.
Half Price Books has also been a proponent of eco-friendly internal operations and continues to make efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint in the following ways:
- – Constructing each store with 100% recyclable carpet as well as environmentally sensitive paints and other materials
- – Installing light and heat repellant window tint in stores, making us eligible for energy code rebates
- – Using diamond-polished concrete and ceramic tile in stores that take non-chemical maintenance
- – Purchasing many recycled office supply products and prints all company stationery and marketing materials on 100% recycled paper
- – Partnering with J.B. Hunt intermodal transportation system to help to reduce co2 emissions versus trucking alone
- – Offering a free electric vehicle charging station at our Dallas Flagship store
