Book Recs for the Characters of Euphoria✨

Euphoria season 2 finale, am I right? In case you haven’t seen the finale or haven’t fully caught up on season 2, this is your only warning. ***Spoilers ahead!***

Okay, so Sunday night’s Euphoria season 2 finale wrapped up Lexi’s play, and of course drama ensued. Although season 3 is confirmed, we don’t know anything other than it will be Euphoria’s last season. So while we wait for more news, wouldn’t it be fun to imagine what the characters would be reading in the meantime? Here is what I think they would be reading!

1. Rue- The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk

This book explores the physiological effects of trauma on the body and different treatments that have been proven to be effective, redefining hope in a hopeless world. After all that Rue has been through this season, I think she could use a little hope.

2. Jules- Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Jules was not one of my favorites this season. She burned a lot of bridges and then aired out Rue’s biggest secret. Because neither Rue nor Elliot are really talking to her, I think she’s going to fill her time reading. Ugly Love is a story about a no-strings-attached relationship that becomes complicated after the two involved can’t stick to the plan. Given Jules’ track record from last season, I think she would love a good story about complicated relationships. She might even end up reading everything written by Colleen Hoover!

3. Maddy- The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck

My girl Maddy – what a year for her! While dealing with all sorts of relationship drama, she seems like she is going down a path of discovery. She admired the woman she was working for and seemed to be taking her advice to heart. It seems fitting that she’d lean into self-help books. The Way of Integrity discusses how to read internal signals that lead towards the true path and recognizing what is yearned for versus what culture sells. Beck brings her expertise as a social scientist, life coach, and human being to help readers uncover what integrity looks like in their own lives. While Maddy will still make her own decision at the end of the day, I think she would try to be well-informed.

4. Cassie- The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont

Oh gosh, Cassie was a MESS this season! Because Cassie is involved in a messy relationship and wanted to be loved no matter what, she’d be reading The Christie Affair, the story of how Miss Nan O’Dea becomes Archie Christie’s mistress, and luring him away from his devoted (and well-known) wife Agatha Christie. I don’t doubt Cassie is going to continue chasing Nate, so while spamming his phone with calls/texts, she’ll also be reading these kinds of stories. If she can’t have love in her real world, she’ll find it in another.

5. Kat- The Savage Road by Christine Feehan

While Kat did not have much screen time this season, the time she did have was weird. I was expecting to see more after she broke up with Ethan because they seemed unfinished. The Savage Road explores the instant attraction between two people and how one person holding themselves back could be the thread that unravels them both.  Kat would fill her time with the kind of love she was imagining in her head.

6. Lexi- All About Love by Bell Hooks

Oh little Lexi, the watcher and writer of all. Her play had very detailed scenes from those around her and because of this my pick for Lexi would be about seeing other ways of thinking. All About Love presents radical new ways to think about love and how that role plays into personal and professional lives. Lexi likes to observe and after airing out practically everyone’s dirty laundry, she might like to try looking into other worlds.

7. Fez- Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

The fan-favorite, Fez, would be reading Thinking, Fast and Slow. This book is the culmination of years of study. Kahneman breaks down human thought and emerges with two very distinct ways of thinking that overlap and oftentimes contradict one another in the brain. It is a cutting-edge look at understanding human behavior and how the mind works. Fez has lots to say when there’s time to hear it and like Kahneman, challenges others to look at their own behavior and rationalize many of their own emotion based decisions.  If I talked to him as often as Lexi did, no doubt I’d open up to him too!

8. Nate- The Judge’s List by John Grisham

Ugh, Nate… There isn’t much hope of seeing change from him in the next season. Now a year closer to graduation, he’d probably spend time reading stories with violent-behavior. He would either be really into crime fiction or maybe even true crime. The Judge’s List follows an investigator on the trail of a serial killer who closes in on a shocking suspect. A bonus pick for Nate-Devil House by John Darnielle. A book about murder, truth, and artistic obsession. Both of these books could definitely be on Nate’s nightstand and maybe lead him further down that rabbit hole.

Who knows what next season holds! In the meantime we can have fun imaging their lives post Lexi’s play! Have thoughts about what another character might be reading? Let us know in the comments! (p.s. – Suze, is no doubt reading “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson, right?)
