Our Top Picks of 2022

Another year has come and gone and boy, have there been some good books to read! Here’s a look at some of our favorites from 2022 (in no particular order).

Fairy Tale by Stephen King – It’s no surprise that Stephen King, one of the most legendary storytellers of all time, would be a part of our list of 2022 top picks. In Fairy Tale, King “goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.”

It Starts with Us by Colleen Hoover – Booktok superstar Collen Hoover brings back Lily and Atlas from her mega-hit It Ends with Us, picking up where we left off in their relationship. Colleen was kind enough to take us Behind the Book on our HPB Blog before the books release. Check it out here!

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy – The former Nickelodeon star’s memoir garnered high praise from HPB staffer Elly… “I’m Glad My Mom Died is an authentic, honest portrayal about the trials and tribulations of being a child actor. The book takes you on the many ups and downs of Jennette’s life with both humor and absolute humility of the situations that both her mother and Nickelodeon put her through. The story will resonate with anyone who suffers from mental health challenges as well as eating disorders. McCurdy shows so much courage, telling her story with a ‘this is the way it is’ attitude.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin – This book takes us on a journey where “two friends—often in love, but never lovers—come together as creative partners in the world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality.”

And There Was Light by Jon Meacham – For the history buffs, the Pulitzer Prize winning biographer takes a look at the life of America’s 16th President, Abraham Lincoln and how he served a divided country and threats to democracy during his presidency.

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel – Award winning author Emily St. John Mandel’s latest work is “a novel of art, time, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon three hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space. A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.”

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng – Ng’s latest novel was Reese Witherspoon’s October 2022 Book Club pick, and marked the first time Reese picked an author for the second time! Our Missing Hearts is “about a mother’s unbreakable love in a world consumed by fear.”

Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez – Debut author Xochitl Gonzalez tells the story of a prominent Puerto Rican family living in New York. Olga is a status-driven wedding planner while her brother, Pedro, is a popular Congressman representing their gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. Both live interesting, appealing public lives, but things aren’t what they seem behind the scenes. Olga Dies Dreaming takes a look at family strife and turmoil, along with political corruption while trying to live the American Dream.

The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera – Silvera returns with a prequel to international bestseller They Both Die in the End. In this book, “two new strangers spend a life-changing day together after Death-Cast first makes their fateful calls.”

Now is Not the Time to Panic by Kevin Wilson – “A bold coming-of-age story, written with Kevin Wilson’s trademark wit and blazing prose, Now Is Not the Time to Panic is a nuanced exploration of young love, identity, and the power of art. It’s also about the secrets that haunt us—and, ultimately, what the truth will set free.”
