Books Read the Movie: Your Fall Guide to Movies Based on Books

Fall movies kick off awards season, leading up to the Oscars in February. There is a very exciting list of movies coming out, and I am sure you want to get a jump on them by reading the novels they are based on. As part of the Books: Read the Movie series, here are five you should have on your reading list.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
This book and film is about three rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his girlfriend to the wedding of the season. Crazy Rich Asians hits the big screen August 15.

First Man by James R. Hansen
The book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong gives us a glimpse of Armstrong’s fascinating life during his days as an engineer, test pilot and eventually the first astronaut to walk on the moon. First Man, the movie, is directed by Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle who brought us La La Land and Whiplash. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. First Man blasts off October 12. Look for it to be an Oscar contender this season.

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
This time around, the film Mowgli is directed by none other than Gollum himself, Andy Serkis. This film has been produced a total of 6 times, so I am sure every everyone is familiar with the story. The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz
As a follow up to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, author David Lagercrantz continues the story of Millennium editor Mikael Blomkvist and the genius hacker and girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth Salander. The film stars Claire Foy as Lisbeth, a switch from the original Swedish movie’s Noomi Rapace and the American version with Rooney Mara. This film hits theaters November 9.

Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy
The book Queen of Scots is an in-depth look at one of history’s most important women, Mary Stuart. The film stars two Oscar nominees for best actress from last year, Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) as Mary and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) as Queen Elizabeth I.  Mary Queen of Scots is in theaters December 7.

There are several other films based on books coming out, you can read ahead of time. These include: The Grinch (How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss) starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander aka J.K. Rowling), Mary Poppins Returns (Mary Poppins Series by P.L. Travers) and the highly anticipated film from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk (If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin).
