An HPB Donation Story

Today is the 10th year Half Price Books has celebrated our own special holiday, Booksgiving Day! We created Booksgiving Day to celebrate the spirit and legacy of donating books, something that’s been important to us since Half Price Books was founded by Pat Anderson and Ken Gjemre 50 years ago. In fact, Ken once said, “Books should fill our lives, not our land.” In the spirit of holiday giving and in keeping with Ken’s renowned motto, Half Price Books was honored to host a 2022 kids’ book drive in Dallas-Fort Worth in September. We partnered with WFAA and United to Learn to collect more than 8,500 new and gently-used children’s books from each of our DFW stores for local schools in need.

Last week at our Flagship location, a group of 25 United to Learn volunteers from Jesuit College Preparatory School joined us in Dallas, TX. They spent their morning sorting book donations for the six DISD elementary school locations chosen for United to Learn’s “BookBash” events, where student’s will receive up to two free books to help build their home libraries.

The first BookBash event was held November 18 at Burleson Elementary in Dallas. Our trusty HPB mascot, BW the Bookworm, had a ton of fun meeting the awesome Burleson teachers and helping students choose their books. We can’t wait for our next batch of BookBash celebrations in December.

Thanks to WFAA and United to Learn for including DFW Half Price Books locations in the ever-important initiative of advancing youth literacy… and above all, we are grateful to our community of HPB Booklovers for their generous donations!
